Artist Selection-Week 7

Khushboo Gulati is a queer LA-based artist who's artwork references the different aspects of their life as a queer Southeast Asian person and how these identities interesect. Their pieces reference ancestors, ancestral connections, femmeness, femme rituals and queerness. Many of these aspects are seen in a lot of their works. The braids symbolize femmeness and ancestral connection. The jewelry symbolizes the culture of jewelry in femme presentation in desi folx. The facial hair along with the makeup symbolize the artists feeling towards their gender. Through Gulati's artwork, they also voice their activism. Their piece, Brown and Lovely critiques the skin-lightening brand, Fair and Lovely, that has become a norm for many desi womyn-identified folx.
