Otro Corazon 2 Reflection

The Otro Corazon 2 Conference was a heartwarming tribute to the artist Tomás Ybarra-Frausto. I loved how the event was an emotional celebration to the life and work of the Chicano and queer artist. I remember walking into the room and immediately being curiously drawn to the arrangement of flowers and the colorful decorations placed in the room. Later on I learned that this is done in the style of Rasquachismo that is heavily influenced by Tomás Ybarra-Frausto. Holly Barnet-Sanchez gave an emotional speech regarding the broad reach and influence that Tomás Ybarra-Frausto had on art. Rasquachismo changed the discourse surrounding Chicano art, whereas the previously the language had been very limited or very eurocentric. There Romo spoke about how Chicano art started to become part of a political movement; it challenged the false assumption that Chicano art is not “American but ethnic,” to which she responds, “All art is ethnic.” Judy Baca is a Latina artist talks about her influence by Tomás Ybarra-Frausto’s concept of Rasquachismo. She wanted to tell an alternative history of people of color in L.A. through a great mural project of L.A. that had contributions from women, POC, and immigrants. They Marianna Nunn described Rasquachismo as a way of making art out of everyday things that encompassed a “make-do” attitude.

Through this conference I’ve learned a lot about Tomás Ybarra-Frausto and the rasquache style. It’s a style that is contextualized depending on the time, place, and the resources available. Some people may describe it as ugly or tacky but it elicits some emotion in the audience. Artists are choosing to reclaim Rasquache by their own choice whereas previously they were taught that anything “Mexican” was “too much.” Rasquachismo introduced a new perspective on art that was not eurocentric and was limited by race, sexuality, and/or gender. I truly got a new perspective on "queering Chicanidad in the arts."
