Artist Focus: Alvin Baltrop

For the artist project I would like to Focus on Alvin Baltrop who's work showcasing the Manhattan pier, a refuge for queer runaways, was not made famous until after his death in 2004. The work of Baltrop provides a narrative for queer youth in New York that was otherwise left untold. I would like to learn more about the underground queer community of New York through Baltrop's work and the voice he sought to give to those who otherwise had their narrative overlooked. I especially would like to focus on why his work was initially rejected by the mainstream art world only to gain popularity more recently.
