Ryan Trecartin

I want to begin research on the LA-based contemporary artist Ryan Trecartin. Using a performative take on video art, Trecartin has redefined queer identity within his films creating characters and settings that extend beyond "normalcy" and into a realm that has transcended gender, social status, and ethnicity. His videos tend to be extensive (2 hours or more), using scripts written in a prose that is analogous to Shakespeare. Word-play, notation, and use of vernacular are extremely common and are both entertaining and contemplative. The Art itself is derived from more of its overall conceptual elements by way of it's loosely constructed plot-lines and themes. Drawing his artistic inspiration from "d-i-y" web-based social platforms, media and internet art, he has been a defining player in furthering this aesthetic.

Trecartin studied and received his BFA at the Rhode Island School of Design and has had gallery showings at larger institutions like MoMA's PS1, the MOCA Pacific Design Center as well as various collaborative and independent projects and installations at smaller galleries and spaces.

I have included a segment of his video "I-BE AREA" (FYI there is some "language")
